What is history, and who gets to make it?

This question sits at the heart of Making Histories, a collaborative initiative between Deakin University and RMIT researchers, Museums Victoria, and young artists and photographers across Naarm (Melbourne) and Djilang (Geelong).

This symposium brings together intergenerational perspectives to explore what happens when young people become makers (rather than just receivers) of historical knowledges and practices. The symposium focuses on responsible relationships and practices of urban history making on unceded lands in the wake of the Yoorrook Justice Commission Report and Victorian Treaty.

The event includes a Welcome to Country; catered lunch; hands-on workshop on co-creation methodologies with the Making Histories team, including young history-makers; intergenerational panel discussion; and invited keynote talk on First Peoples histories and futures in education.

Symposium Conveners: Dr Gideon Boadu (RMIT), A/Prof David Rousell (RMIT), Dr Julie Carmel (RMIT), Alinta Andrews (RMIT), Dr Kelly Hussey-Smith (RMIT), Dr Eve Mayes (Deakin), Dr Merinda Kelly (Deakin), Prof Julianne Moss (Deakin)

Invited Speakers: A/Prof Al Fricker (Deakin), A/Prof Riikka Hohti (University of Helsinki), Alinta Andrews (RMIT), and others TBC
