Australian Summit on Gender and STEM: Rethinking an issue that refuses to resolve
The issue of gender equity in STEM fields, as with many areas, refuses to resolve despite decades of attention. The problem of participation in STEM is deeply complex and involves multiple influences that constitute barriers to equity.
The Australian Gender and STEM Summit was a joint Deakin University and University of Melbourne event held in late 2023 that brought together experts from various fields to discuss this long-standing and intractable issue and find productive ways forward as a community
In light of the current debates and initiatives in this space, including new theorising around gender and intersectionality, this summit was important and timely. Speakers from key Australian institutions and researchers from a range of disciplines explored the implications of contemporary gender perspectives on STEM gender policy and initiatives. The report coming from the day represents key themes emerging from the presentations and ensuing discussion.
