Dr Seamus Delaney elected to board of international chemistry organisation
At its recent Annual Meeting the members of International Organisation of Chemical Sciences in Development (IOCD) General Assembly elected Dr Seamus Delaney as Secretary of the IOCD for a five year term beginning on 1 January 2025.
The IOCD was established in 1981 to promote the chemical sciences’ role in sustainable, equitable human development and economic growth. The IOCD seeks to help build capacity in the chemical sciences, and to collaborate with other organisations to advance sustainable development globally through strengthening education, research and practice in the chemical sciences.
IOCD’s work is taken forward by international teams of scientists and is organised into Action and Working Groups:
- Materials for Energy Conversion, Saving and Storage (MATECSS)
- Chemists for Sustainability (C4S)
- Green and Sustainable Electronics (GSE)
- Chemistry Education
Seamus will chair the Chemistry Education Working Group, taking the place of retiring Secretary and Head of the Strategic Development, Professor Stephen Matlin (UK), who recently spoke at a joint Deakin Centre for Regenerating Futures/Centre for Sustainable Bioproducts event. Seamus will lead education initiatives that the IOCD develops and represent IOCD in joint organisation initiatives, such as the IOCD- Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Global Essay Competition and IUPAC-IOCD Systems Thinking in Chemistry for Sustainability project.
