Irish principal associations commission study on school leaders’ wellbeing
The Irish Primary Principals’ Network (IPPN) and the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD) commissioned Dr Ben Arnold and Dr Mark Rahimi of REDI’s Educator Health and Wellbeing Research Group to investigate the occupational health, safety, and wellbeing of school leaders in Ireland. This research, conducted from 2022 to 2024, was initiated due to concerns about the increasing complexity and workload demands on Irish school leaders leading to negative health outcomes and increased burnout.
The reports from this three-year study highlight the significant challenges faced by principals and deputy principals in both primary and post-primary schools. The study emphasises the critical role of the school work environment, noting that heavy workloads, emotionally demanding tasks, and substantial bureaucratic challenges often prevent school leaders from focusing on core leadership duties.
Principals expressed widespread dissatisfaction with the support from policymakers and system leaders, calling for systemic changes to make their work healthier and more sustainable. The reports also stress the urgent need for targeted action to address mental health challenges, suggesting strategies such as peer support networks, access to qualified psychologists, and training in healthy leadership practices.
By addressing both immediate and systemic issues, these reports provide crucial insights into creating a healthier, more sustainable school leadership profession in Ireland.
